How about an auto generated unique field like a GUID. This eliminates the issue of incremental integers across devices.
One simple possibility is taking the decimal value of the current date and time (to the second) and shift the decimal 5 places to the right. The resulting long would be "unique enough" to handle most situations. There are certainly other schemes.
MobiDB could include this type of auto-generated unique as part of their field types. It would only update at record creation time.
